When should pine bark mulch be laid to be sure that weeds do not sprout?

The best is to start laying pine bark mulch early in the year (from the end of January – beginning of February), weather permitting.
At this time, the soil is still "asleep" and weeds do not yet start growing – therefore, the use of pine bark mulch is the most effective during this period to suppress them.

To maintain and effective protection against weeds, your pine bark mulch should be regularly replenished!

Pine bark mulch should be laid at the appropriate time.

The following periods are the most appropriate to lay pine bark mulch:

Preventive mulching: the ideal time is between the end of January – middle of March!
- It is at this time that the closest attention should be paid to laying the appropriate thickness of mulch: if you create appropriate protection in this period, you can save yourself a lot of trouble later in the year!

Mulch maintenance period: between early May – end of June!
- This period should be used by those who wanted to save the trouble of mulching at the beginning of the year but can still do something to have their garden neat and tidy during the summer. (Naturally, at this time, all weeds that are visible above ground level should be pulled out!)

Closing mulching: between early October – December!
- This period is important as it is during this time that your plants prepare for their winter “sleep”. If thickened properly, the soil covering will provide protection and insulation, thus the roots of your plants will survive winter frosts at a more even temperature level.

Immediate mulch replenishment may also be necessary outside these periods if the mulch has worn or thinned away. That can be fatal as if you are not careful weeds can take rule over your garden in no time – and that is something you want to avoid, is it not?

Please email me any questions you may have using the Contact menu so I can help you, too.

Wishing you much success in covering the soil of your garden and many pleasant days!

With kind regards,
Kátai, Tamás

Customer comments
Beautiful and useful for both our plants and the soil.
We laid coarse pine bark mulch on our playground in a thickness of 20 cm and it works fantastic. We received excellent quality bark mulch.
While we are building our garden, many people admire it and ask us where we got it. We will send you further customers!
We first bought only coarse mulch, which looked good but weeds sprouted from under it. It was when we asked why we were having the weeds that it turned out that that at the bottom always fine mulch should be laid and the larger pieces should be used at the top only for decoration. Since we started paying attention to this, all weeds have disappeared from the area covered with mulch and the whole thing looks great.
These mulches meet expectations for a shorter or longer while, applying the right thickness is very important.
